Karas, Malayan Eaglewood tree
Description
Tree to about 40 m with irregular crown. Leaves simple, alternate, 6-12 cm long with fine parallel secondary veins. Flowers green or dirty yellow in short stalked clusters. Fruits flattened egg-shaped, 2.5-4 cm long.
Ecology
Lowland rain forest.
Distribution
Widespread Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand
Uses
The resinous heartwood from wounds is a major sours of agarwood, used in perfume and incense. Timber is a light hardwood.
