Description

Medium-sized tree to 25 m tall. Leaves 15-22 cm long, ovate to elliptic-oblong. Male and female flowers in separate trees. Both male and female flowers on racemes, greenish-white for male and yellowish-brown for female, fragrant, male racemes up to 7 cm long in leaf axils just below leaves, female to 30 cm long at leaf axils or along older branches. Fruits 1.2-2 cm long, globose, ripening orange or yellow-brown, splitting open when ripe, exposing seeds with orange-red pulp.


Ecology

Evergreen lowland forest or swamps to 600 m altitute.

Distribution

S. Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Banka and Borneo.

Uses

Fruits are edible, vary from sour to sweet. Timber is hard and durable, used for general purposes.
