Description

Small evergreen tree to 10 m tall, much branched, stems crooked. Leaves 7-15 cm long, opposite, elliptic. Flowers c, 2.5 cm across, solitary, axillary, white. Fruits c. 4-12 cm long, globose, ovoid or pear-shaped, green ripening yellow.


Ecology

In native habitats, found in open areas of savannah/shrub transitional zones.

Distribution

Widely cultivated in the tropics for its edible fruits and often naturalised. Colombia, Mexico, Peru and United States of America.

Uses

Fruits edible and often ripe fruits made into juice.
