Description

Large tree 60-75 m height with diam. to 240 cm. Trunk with peeling bark, revealing streaks of pale green, red, orange, gray and purplish brown. Leaves oppositely arranged, 7.5-10 cm long, elliptic. Flowers arranged in a branched inflorescence in leaf axils or on the end of branches, white to pale yellow. Fruit is a woody capsule with 3 or 4 valves at the rim.


Ecology

Lowland to lower montane rainforest from sea level to 1,800 m elevation.

Distribution

Irian Jaya in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines.

Uses

Widely grown in forest plantations for its timber and pulpwood. Sometimes planted as a street tree.
