Description

Evergreen monecious tree to 45 m tall with strong buttresses and roundish crown. Leaves 23-55 cm long, rough hairy on upper surface and densely hairy on lower surface. Flower heads on leafy twigs, male finger-like, female upright, barrel shaped. Fruits cylindric, c. 10-12 cm long, yellow brown with soft recurved spines.

Ecology

Common on lowland forests and open secondary forest. This is the commonest Artocarpus in secondary vegetation.

Distribution

Myanmar, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, Lesser Sunda Islands and Philippines.

Uses

Fruits are edible but are hardly eaten. It produces a light hardwood timber.
