Deciduous tree to 30 m tall. Leaves 10-25 cm long, elliptic-oblong with heart-shaped base. Flowers unisexual, 0.8-1.2 cm long, pale yellow with pink base at first becoming pink or red, in clusters behind leaf flushes. Fruits 7-12 cm long, in groups 4-5 on common stalk, ripening bright orange-red, leathery with velvety hairs, with glossy black seeds.
