Description

Large deciduous tree to 36 m tall, with large dome-shaped crown. Leaves digitate with 5-9 leaflets 10-15 cm long. Flowers unisexual, 2-2.5 cm across, dark red, foul smelling in loose branched drooping clusters. Fruits 8-12 cm in star-like clusters of 3-5 on long common stalk behind leaves, green maturing brick red, dehiscing exposing bluish black seeds.


Ecology

Fairly common along rocky coasts and river banks.

Distribution

Widespread from E. Africa to most of Tropical Asia to N. Australia.

Uses

Widely planted as a street tree.
