Description

Long-lived pachycauls (plants with disporportionately thick trunk), 5-25m tall, trunk bottle-shaped and can reach a diameter of 10-14 m. Leaves digitally compound. Tree bears very large, pendulous heavy, white flowers which open during late afternoon stay open for one night. Fruits large, egg-shaped capsules.


Ecology

Dry, hot savannahs.

Distribution

Most of Africa particularly drier, less tripical climates of Africa.

Uses

Fruits are edible, young leaves can also be eaten.
