Shrub or small busy tree to 8 m tall. Leaves digitate with 3-5 leaflets, opposite, central one 6-12 cm long, narrowly elliptic to lanceolate, usually distinctly toothed. Flowers c. 0.7 cm long, pale blue to deep purple in terminal spike-like cluster, stalk purple. Fruits 0.4-0.8 cm long, oval to about globose.
