Description

Evergreen tree to 30 m tall, diameter to over 50 cm. The trunk is often with low branches. Leaves simple phyllodes, distinctly curved, c. 10-16 cm long. Flowers in slender spikes, c. 10 cm long with short main stalk, yellow. Fruits flattened in strongly contorted coils, 2.5-4 cm diameter; seeds black encircled with orange aril.


Ecology

Estimated to range from subtropical moist to wet forest, through tropical dry to wet forest.

Distribution

Moluccas, New Guinea and northern Australia.

Uses

Widely planted and often naturalised in open areas.
