Description
Deciduous tree to 30 m tall with irregular crown. Leaves opposite, palmately compound with 5 leaflets. Flowers 5-10 cm long, large, showy, tubular, in various shades of pink to purple and white in loose clusters. Fruits slender, flattened capsule, c. 35 cm long.
Ecology
Lowland deciduous forest to 1,200 m elevation.
Distribution
S Mexico to Venezuela and Ecuador.
Uses
Widely planted as an ornamental and as a street tree. In climates with distinct dry season, leaves typically drop at the beginning of the dry season and the subsequently dry conditions trigger a mass blooming near the end of the dry season. In ever-wet climates, flowers tend to boom intermittently throughout the year.
