Sausage Tree

Description

Deciduous or semi-deciduous tree to 10 m tall. Leaves opposite, or in whorls of three, pinnately compound, 9-20 cm long, crowded near ends of branches, leaflets 3-5 pairs with a terminal leaflet, ovate-oblong to elliptic-ovate. Fruit large, sausage-shaped, up to 60 cm long and weighing up to 7 kg.

Savanna plains.

Distribution

Tropical Africa.

Uses

Sometimes cultivated as an ornamental. Fresh fruits are poisonous but after drying, roasting or fermentation, they can be eaten.
