Description
Small deciduous tree 5-15 m tall. Leaves bi-pinnately compound, opposite, up to 45 cm long with fine leaflets (fern-like). Flowers up to 5 cm long, bell-shaped in clusters of up to 30 cm long, purple. Fruits woody seed pod, rounded, flattened, c. 5 cm across with winged seeds.
Ecology
Bushland, grassland, wooded ravines and riverbanks.
Distribution
Bolivia and Argentina.
Uses
Often grown as ornamental. It does better in climates with strong seasonality where it produces complete purple blooms. In wetter areas lacking seasonality, it remains evergreen with poor flowering pattern.
