Description

An evergreen shrub to 4 m tall, bushy habit. Leaves large, thick, covered with pale silvery-green wax and woolly hairs on both sides. Inflorescence on racemes towards the apex with clusters of large white to lilac flowers. FFruits a pair of fat kidney-shaped fleshy capsules, ripening and splitting apart to reveal wind dispersed light seeds attached with woolly hairs.


Ecology

The species is native in drier climates of S India to S China, Indo-China and Indonesia.

Distribution

In Malaysia it has naturalised in coastal areas.

Uses

Sometimes grown as an ornamental.
