Description
Similar to A. angustiloba in habit but shorter in height to 25 m, sometimes forming plank buttresses to 1.2 m high. Leaves in whorls of 3-4(-5) without a distinct intrapetiolar stipule at the base of the petiole. Inflorescence 3-11 cm long, rather lax, few-flowered; flowers cream white to yellow. Fruits a pair of follicles, 12-25 cm long.
Ecology
Common in lowland forest and frequently in swampy environment in freshwater swamp and peat swamp forests. It is also found growing in abandoned edges of tin-mining ponds. Here it sometimes grows floating on sedge/grass mats.
Distribution
A widespread species found throughout Southeast Asia.
Uses
The timber can be used for carving and the root wood is one of the lightest wood in the world and can be a substitute for cork.
