Description

Tree to 50 m tall, diameter to 1 m and characteristic high fluted bole with pagoda shaped crown. Leaves are arranged in whorls of 4-7(-9). The creamy white to pale yellow flowers are arranged in dense clusters, are fragrant. Fruits in paired pendulous follicles. Trees often flower synchronously, in flowering trees the whole crown may be filled with creamy white to pale yellow flowers.


Ecology

Found naturally in lowland forests to 1,000 m elevation and often in secondary forest.

Distribution

Thailand, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo and Java.

Uses

The timber is not durable; used as a light hardwood. The tree has an attractive pagoda crown and is widely used in landscaping.
