Description

Evergreen tree to 18 m with straight trunk and dense narrowly columnar crown and slender drooping twigs (var. pendula) and the wild form with thick bushy crown. Leaves 12-23 cm long, narrowly lanceolate with tapering tip and wavy margin. Flowers 1.2-2 cm long, pale green to cream or yellowish, not fragrant, in dense groups at leaf axils. Fruits 1.5-2 cm on stout individual stalk, numerous fruits up to 15 on woody common stalk, ovoid, ripening yellow to black.

Lowland forest.

Distribution

India and Sri Lanka.

Uses

Widely planted as an ornamental especially var. pendula.
