Description

Evergreen or briefly deciduous tree to 30 m tall with very dense crown and drooping lower branches. Leaves opposite, 4-12 cm long, elliptic with pointed tip. Flowers c. 3 mm across, tiny, white. Fruits 2.5-3.5 cm long, oval or broadly ovoid, ripening yellow to orange, smooth, thin-skinned, pulpy inside, edible but usually sour in wild trees.


Ecology

Lowland forests. Sometimes cultivated for its fruits.

Distribution

Andaman Is., Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Banka, Billiton and Borneo.

Uses

Fruits are edible, often sour but some selected varieties are sweet.
