Description

Evergreen or briefly deciduous tree to 30 m tall with very dense crown and drooping lower branches. Leaves opposite, 14-30 cm long, elliptic with pointed tip. Flowers c. 3 mm across, tiny, white. Fruits 3.5-5 cm long, oval or broadly ovoid, ripening yellow to orange, smooth, thin-skinned, pulpy inside, edible but usually sour in wild trees.


Ecology

Lowland forests. Sometimes cultivated for its fruits.

Distribution

S & SE Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and W Java.

Uses

Fruits are edible and rather sour even when ripe.
